Building a Base Tan • Tan every other day as long as you develop no skin irritation or sunburn. • Tan will build in 4-6 sessions on Platinum & Gold Levels. • Tan will build in 7-10 sessions on Silver Level. • Use a Step 1 tanning lotion, you tan 30-40% faster using a lotion.
Maintaining Your Tan • When you have achieved your desired color, tan once every 7-10 days in the Platinum or Gold Level beds or once or twice a week on the Silver Level beds. • Use a Step 2 tanning lotion to break through any tanning plateau.
Preserving Your Tan • Exfoliate while bathing. Total Submersion is made for indoor tanners to add nutrients that build a tan. Vitatan 2000 baths skin in intense hydration to encourage skin to function more efficiently to extend the life of your tan. Copper compounds help deepen your color and maintain the longevity of your tan. • Moisturize your skin with a good Cal Tan moisturizer. Total Immersion is a creamy, fast absorbing moisturizer that enhances the appearance and extends your tanning results. Use it daily. • Maintain good nutrition and drink plenty of healthy fluids, water and fruit juices.
Photosensitivity • Many prescription medications can cause skin irritations and sunburn. Please check with your pharmacist if you are on any medication prior to tanning. • Many over the counter medications can cause photosensitivity. Ibuprofen and St. John’s wart, prenatal vitamins are just a few. Please ask your tanning consultant about any medication you may be taking. Although new products come on the market daily, we do have a list of photosensitive products. • Photosensitivity can cause a rash, an itchy feeling or sunburn. Please be aware that anything you put in your body or on your skin has the potential to create photosensitivity. Avoid fragrances the days you will be tanning.
Eye Protection • UV light has been shown to cause permanent eye damage. We advise all tanners to wear FDA compliant goggles. We provide goggles free in your tanning room or you may purchase a pair. All stores have several varieties of goggles for sale.
Skin Irritations • Although we work with you to determine your skin type and discuss any medications you are taking, occasionally skin irritations will occur. Your skin may feel warm the day you tan, this is normal. • An itchy feeling may indicate dry skin or an allergic reaction. • A rash may indicate an allergic reaction and you should discontinue tanning until it is gone and then begin tanning very gradually. • A sunburn means that you need to decrease your time. • Most skin irritations can be alleviated by discontinuing tanning until your symptoms are gone, using a product with aloe, such as Cal Tan Insurance, and then tanning very gradually when you begin again. • If symptoms persist, you should discontinue tanning and see your doctor.
White Spots • Pressure points will not tan, you need good oxygen flow to tan. Be sure to lift shoulder blades, tailbone and legs during your session. • Quarter or dime size white spots may be tinea versicolor, a disorder caused by the overproduction of normal bacteria of the skin flora. • Irregular shaped white areas that are photosensitive may be vitiligo. This is a hormonal condition in which melanocytes are degenerating and not producing melanin any longer.
